We all now most likely use a liquid detergent and or fabric softener. Have you ever noticed the “blue goo” build up in the little cup that is used to measure your liquid. Well that same “goo” also builds up over time in your washers tub and drain pump. This build up creates a trap for organic dirt and grime in both top load and front load washers. This is where that musty / moldy / mildew smell comes from. Simply leaving the washer door open will help alleviate this to an extent but over time the “blue goo” with organics will degrade, decompose and begin to smell. It may also cause a build up of trash (old lint, strings etc.) in the drain pump and cause a blockage. Any of which may cause a costly washer repair.
A very easy maintenance step to keep your machine clean and running good is to clean your washer at least every 6 months. Yes that’s correct I said clean your washer. There are a few products out that can do this like “Affresh” which may cost as much as $3.00 per tablet. There is a much better solution. Go to your local Publix or wherever you shop and buy a gallon of distilled white vinegar. Pour it directly into your washer tub and then fill the bottle with hot water and pour it into your tub. Let that mixture sit overnight. Then the next day run a clean or sanitize or a cycle that uses hot water. Your machine may pump out the vinegar solution, that’s fine, it did its job overnight. The hot cycle will now wash away any residue and will leave your machine clean and fresh.
