Most people may never think about this, however this tip will help prevent a flood in your home.
When you have your washing machine installed, likely it had rubber hoses connected to the hot and cold water lines. These hoses are very rugged but with time and constant pressure they can fail. Over time they might develop a weak spot in the hose or the gasket may weaken. In either case the result could mean a major water leak in your home. The average water line can produce approximately 5 gallons of water per minute or 300 gallons of water an hour. The result if unnoticed for several hours. How about 4 to 6 inches of water throughout your home. OUCH!
Suggestion: Replace your washers rubber hoses at least every 5 years. If you have braided stainless steel hoses then the recommendation is to replace them every 10 years. In both cases if you notice bulging anywhere in the hose or if the ends become corroded or rusty then replace them sooner. The cost for new hoses verses repairing water damage to your home is negligible.
Another suggestion while we’re here is to exercise the water valves about once a month. How bad would it be if a leak were to occur and you were unable to close the valve because it was frozen open. This is especially true of the older gate valves (like outdoor spigots) used in older homes.
